John was born and raised in Scotland, arrived in New Zealand in 1988. After leaving the University of Aberdeen, John has been involved in agriculture, fishing, and worked in the North Sea oil industry for many years. He also had a taste of amateur dramatics in Scotland, where he experienced some success. Upon arriving in New Zealand in 1988, he worked as a medication representative and in the building industry. This is when he also started appearing in the occasional TV commercial. John is the father of four daughters, two of whom are involved in the film industry. Currently, he works part-time as a gardener while working on a screenplay loosely based on his father’s experiences during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
